With any type of output-based response on Extempore, instructors can decide how many times the student can attempt the question, either once or multiple times.

Single-attempt questions allow students only one chance to respond. If the student backs out of the question or leaves Extempore in any other way, the response will be locked. Once a response is submitted, the only way to submit another response is for the instructor to reset a question. Single-attempt questions can have time to review, time to respond, and minimum response time configurations added.

Multiple-attempt questions allow for multiple attempts. Students can back out of these questions and attempt at a later time and can also re-record a response after finishing recording. However, time to review cannot be added to these questions.

Here's how you can configure both of these within Extempore.

As noted, single-attempt question means the student only has one chance to respond to the prompt. This is controlled at the bottom of the question creation page in the limitations section.

Regardless of other parameters, single-attempt questions will always prompt students with a warning and details of other parameters before the student begins the prompt. Encourage your students to read these warnings carefully before beginning the question.

By default, questions will be set to unlimited attempts within the parameters section of the question creation page. You can still configure a maximum and minimum response time, but because the student has multiple attempts, you cannot add a time to review.

As noted above, multiple attempt questions will allow students the option to re-record a response upon finishing.
