Available for: Teachers using Edlink-integrated LMS systems (Canvas API, Blackboard API, Skyward API, Schoology API)
Release Date: January 29, 2026
What's New?
Teachers in Edlink-integrated districts can now add a custom class nickname that makes it easier to identify classes in Extempore. This nickname:
Displays prominently in the Student Portal (on class cards)
Appears in the Gradebook class dropdown
Persists through nightly syncs and won't be overwritten
Is visible to both teachers and students
Why Use Class Nicknames?
LMS-generated class names are often long, technical, or unclear (e.g., "SPAN-101-SEC-03-FALL-2025-SMITH-PERIOD-4"). A nickname lets you simplify this to something more recognizable, like "Spanish 1 - Period 4" or "Beginner Spanish."
How to Add a Class Nickname
Open the class you want to rename
Check the box that says "Override class name"
Enter your preferred class name in the text field
Save your changes
What You'll See
After enabling the override:
Your custom nickname (editable)
The original LMS class name (displayed below for reference)
In Student Portal:
Students will see your custom nickname on their class cards
In Gradebook:
Your nickname appears in the class dropdown
The LMS class name is still visible for support and troubleshooting purposes
Important Notes
β Nicknames are sync-safe: Your custom nickname will NOT be overwritten during nightly LMS syncs
β Original name preserved: The LMS class name remains available for reference and support
β Student-facing: Students see the nickname you set, making it easier for them to identify the correct class
β Edlink districts only: This feature is currently available only for districts using Edlink API integrations
