Video & Audio Transcriptions

See how student submissions get transcribed on Extempore.

Transcriptions for individual audio and video attempts display:

  • For instructors in the Gradebook

  • For students in the Student Portal under Completed

Transcriptions are available typically within a few minutes, but timing can vary.

Important: The class language selected by the instructor is the default language Extempore uses for transcriptions.

Where instructors can view transcriptions (Gradebook)

Instructors can view transcriptions while reviewing a student’s submission in the Gradebook.

Where students can view transcriptions (Student Portal → Completed)

Students can view their own transcriptions in the Student Portal under Completed (once the submission is in that section).

Steps

  1. Log in to the Student Portal.

  2. Go to the Completed tab.

  3. Click the relevant assignment.

  4. Open Instructor Feedback.

  5. Review the Transcription (shown below the instructor feedback for the attempt).

What this means

When a student records audio or video, Extempore generates a transcription using the class language the instructor selected for that class.

If the transcription UI says the target language does not match what the student is speaking, one common reason is that the class language setting does not match the language the student is actually using in the recording. Another common cause is audio quality, like background noise, low volume, or overlapping speech, which can reduce transcription accuracy.

Example

  • The instructor sets the class language to Spanish.

  • A student answers in English.

  • The transcription may appear incorrect or report a mismatch, because Extempore is attempting to transcribe using Spanish as the default language.

How to fix it

  1. In the class settings, confirm the class language is set correctly.

  2. If the class language is wrong, update it to the intended language.

  3. If the class language was incorrect when the attempt was recorded, have the student submit a new attempt (or re-record, if needed) so Extempore can generate a new transcription using the updated class language.
