Within Extempore, there are a few different ways student accounts are created. This primarily depends on whether the district is using Extempore with an LMS/SIS, Google Classroom integration, or if they are not using an integration with Extempore.

Account Creation Type

Explanation

Google Classroom

Automatic

Instructors syncs Google Classroom with Extempore, creates assignment, and students are considered enrolled in Extempore after connecting to the first assessment from Google Classroom.

LMS/SIS Integration

Automatic

Student accounts provisioned after Extempore is synchronized with your LMS. This step is handled by District Admins and the Extempore Team.

Non-Integrated Account

Manual

Instructors share the enrollment URL with students where students will create a new account via username and password or with Google SSO.

Enrolling Students in Extempore

Student enrollment in Extempore depends on how your class is set up. Follow the section below that matches your setup to ensure students are enrolled correctly.

Google Classroom Integration — Enrolling Students

When using Google Classroom, student accounts are created automatically, but enrollment isn’t complete until students access their first assignment.

How it works

  1. Sync Google Classroom with Extempore

  2. Students will appear as Pending in the Extempore roster

  3. Create or import the first individual assessment in Extempore

  4. The assessment automatically syncs to Google Classroom

  5. Students must click the first Extempore assignment from Google Classroom

  6. Once accessed, students move from Pending → Active in Extempore

Important tips

  • Use an individual assignment (not a group assignment) for first-time enrollment

  • Simply syncing the class does not complete enrollment — students must open an assignment

LMS / SIS Integrations (Canvas, Schoology, etc.) — Enrolling Students

For LMS and SIS integrations, student accounts are fully automated and managed at the district level.

How it works

  • Student accounts are created automatically by the district and Extempore

  • Instructors do not need to manually sync or enroll students

  • Roster changes should be made in the LMS and communicated to district admins

  • New or updated rosters sync to Extempore nightly at midnight

Need it sooner?

  • A district admin can trigger a Full Sync via Extempore NAPI for immediate updates

Non-Integrated / Manual Setup — Enrolling Students

Use this method if your class is not connected to an LMS or SIS.

How it works

  • Instructors manually create or upload students in Extempore

  • Assign assessments to the class or individual students

  • Students must receive a class enrollment link to access Extempore

Common use cases

  • Standalone classes

  • Special or one-off situations
