We’re excited to introduce one of our most-requested features: the ability to exclude students from an assessment or assign it to just one student (hello, makeup work!). Previously, assessments were automatically assigned to all students in a class. Now, teachers have complete control over who gets what, directly from the assessment setup page.
Where to Find It
When creating or editing an assessment, scroll to the bottom of the page to find the new section titled Assigned Students.
By default, all students are still assigned just like before. But now, you can:
Uncheck "Assign All"
Select only the student(s) you want to assign the assessment to
What Students See
Excluded Students
Will not see the assessment in their Extempore account
Tip: Excluded students can easily be reassigned later, which you will see in the steps below for Assign Students who were previously Excluded
Assigned Students
Will see and complete the assessment as usual.
What it looks like in the Gradebook
Students who you've excluded will display a red ‘E’ within the grade book, so that it is clear that there is no submission or grade expected unless they are reassigned.
You won't be able to view or leave feedback for excluded students since no submission is expected.
Pro Tip: To quickly assign an excluded student to an assessment from the Gradebook, Click the 3-dot menu by the assessment name, select Edit assessment. Follow the steps below to Assign Students who were previously Excluded
Use Cases:
Assigning to One Student Only (exclude majority)
Uncheck 'Assign All'
Selecting the 1 student (or multiple) to assign
Click Save
Reassigning a Previously Excluded Student
Want to give an excluded student access again?
Go to the Edit Assessment page
Find the student under Assigned Students
Check their name
Click Save
If the student is unable to see the assessment after re-assigning and refreshing the page, make sure the assessment Due Date is in the future.
FAQ
Q: Can I provide a score or feedback if a student is excluded from an assessment?
No, a submission is required in order to provide a score or feedback.
Q: If I exclude a student from an assignment for an LMS integrated class, what will excluded students see in the LMS?
As of March 31st 2025, the assessment will display within the LMS but the student will not see it in Extempore once clicked. This is something we're actively working to improve but didn't want it to delay releasing the feature.
