Sometimes on Extempore you may have to submit a response via a screen recording. There are few things to be aware of when submitting this type of response. Learn more below.
Responding to a Screen Recording Prompt on Extempore
Within an assessment on Extempore, you will see the question tile with the icon below. This indicates that the response requires a screen recording.
On desktop
Immediately upon beginning the assessment, a popup will appear asking you which part of your screen you want to share. Choose either a tab, window, or your entire screen, then click share.
Note: Even upon clicking share in this popup window, your response has not begun to record yet. You must click RECORD within the Extempore page and then the recording will begin.
Click record to begin the recording, and submit your attempt once done.
On mobile
The screen recording process works a little differently on a mobile device.
Extempore will ask for permission to record your screen and microphone. Make sure to allow both when prompted.
You will not see the tab/window/screen sharing popup that appears on desktop — mobile devices only record your device screen.
Mobile recording can only capture what happens inside the Extempore app. If your response involves presenting something outside Extempore — like a slideshow or another app — mobile recording won't work for that. Use a desktop or laptop instead.
If your response requires showing your face on camera along with your screen, this option isn't available on mobile — you'll need to complete that response from a desktop or laptop instead.
Before you start, close unnecessary apps, make sure your device has enough battery, and connect to a stable internet connection.
Click RECORD on the Extempore page to begin. Wait for the recording to start before continuing your response.
Stay inside the Extempore app for your entire response. On iOS, leaving Extempore, switching apps, or locking your device will stop or fail the recording. On Android, locking your device can also stop the recording.
Once you're done, click stop, then wait for the upload to finish before leaving the page.

Q: Why isn't my recording starting after I click "Share"?
A: Clicking "Share" only enables screen sharing. You must click the "Record" button on the Extempore page to begin recording.
Q: How can I tell if my recording has started?
