Add YouTube videos to Questions

Enhance your questions even more with authentic language from YouTube.

YouTube is a great source of authentic target-language video. In Extempore, you can add a YouTube video to a question prompt so students can watch (or rewatch) it while responding.

How to add YouTube videos to Questions

Watch the video for a quick walkthrough, or follow the steps below.

Step 1: In the question creation page, click YouTube.

Step 2: Paste the video link. The thumbnail will appear automatically. Click Use link to attach the video to your question.

⚠️ Note:

  • The video must be published and available on YouTube. Videos marked as private or that have been removed won’t display in Extempore.

  • YouTube Shorts aren’t supported at the moment. If a Shorts link doesn’t display, try using the standard YouTube watch URL instead.

Cropping YouTube videos

Sometimes YouTube videos can be too long. With Extempore’s crop feature, you can trim a YouTube video to show only a specific section within a question.

Watch the video below for a quick tutorial, or follow the written directions.

How to crop a YouTube video on Extempore

Step 1: Add your YouTube video as described above. When the popup appears, set the start and end time for the portion of the video you’d like to show.

Tip: Use minutes:seconds (for example, 0:30 to 1:10).

Step 2: Click Use link to attach the video to the question. The start and end times will display below the attachment.

How to include Closed Captions (CC) in a YouTube video on Extempore

If the YouTube video has captions available, students can turn them on in the embedded player.

  1. Add your YouTube video as described in the steps above.

  2. Open the question preview and start playing the video.

  3. Click the CC button (or the Settings gear) in the player and choose a caption language (if available).

4. Save the question prompt.

Students can enable captions from the video player (if the video provides them).

If the video doesn’t display

  • Confirm the link is a standard YouTube video URL (not a Shorts link).

  • Confirm the video is available (not private or removed).

  • Try opening the video in an incognito/private browser window to confirm it’s accessible.
