You can copy an assessment on Extempore in order to make a similar assignment or modify it for a student's needs.

How to copy an assessment

Step 1: Click the edit icon for the class in which you’d like to copy the assessment.

Step 2: Click the copy icon for the assessment.

Step 3: Follow the steps on the popup screen.

  1. Click on the drop-down menu and select the class(es) to which you would like to copy the assessment.

  2. Give the assessment a new name.

  3. Modify the timeline for the assessment. When you copy the assessment, you can set a new start and end time.

  4. Clicking save as draft will not add a new start and end time. Assessments saved as drafts are not available to students until dates are set.

  5. Click copy to complete the duplication process. Your page will refresh automatically and the copied assessment will appear.

Can't Copy or Create a Group Assessment in Google Classroom?

If you're unable to copy or create a group assessment in a Google Classroom-synchronized class, this is typically because your class doesn't have any enrolled students in Extempore yet.

Why This Happens

Google Classroom classes appear as "empty" in Extempore until at least one student becomes enrolled. Even though students are synced from Google Classroom, they won't be enrolled in Extempore until you create your first assessment.

Important: When you try to create a group assessment in an empty class, you'll see an error message explaining that students need to be enrolled first. However, when you try to copy a group assessment, no error message appears—which can make it unclear why the action is blocked.

How to Fix This

To activate your Google Classroom class and enable group assessments, follow these steps:

Step 1: Create an Individual Assessment First

Before you can work with group assessments, you need to enroll students by creating, copying, or importing an individual assessment (not a group assessment).

You can:

  • Create a new individual assessment

  • Copy an existing individual assessment from another class

  • Import an individual assessment

Step 2: Students Are Automatically Enrolled

Once you've added the individual assessment, all students synced from Google Classroom will automatically be enrolled in Extempore.

Step 3: Create or Copy Group Assessments

Now that students are enrolled, you can successfully create or copy group assessments in your class.

Example Scenario

Your situation: You've just synced a new Google Classroom class and want to copy a group assessment from last semester.

What to do:

  1. First, create or copy any individual assessment in the new class

  2. Wait for students to be enrolled (this happens automatically)

  3. Then copy your group assessment—it will now work as expected
