Understanding the Class page

Learn about everything you can do from the main class page.

Within a given class page, there are quite few things you can do, including editing class details, filtering the main assessment list, and even providing students with time accommodations.


Editing class details

To edit details within a class, navigate to the class you would like to edit within your instructor account and click on the pencil icon to enter the class and make changes.

Within a class, you can...

  • Edit the class name

  • Edit the class image

  • Filter assessments by status to control what is displayed on the screen

To edit the class name, click the space next to class name and enter the name you would like to use.

To edit the featured class image, click the image to the left of the class name and upload your desired image.

After you have made changes, make sure to click save in the bottom right corner to save your progress.


Understanding assessment filters

You can use the filter checkboxes at the top of your assessment list to control what displays on the class page. This is particularly helpful when you have many assessments in your class.

Assessments can be filtered by the following status:

  • Active: assessments that have active time windows, meaning the current time falls between the start and end time.

  • Scheduled: assessments with start times scheduled to open in the future.

  • Past Due: assessments with end times in the past.

  • Draft: assessments which have been saved as drafts and do not have a current time window applied.

  • Incomplete: assessments missing questions or prompts and thus cannot be assigned yet.

To change the assessment time frame and thus change the assessment status, click into the assessment to edit the start and end times. For more, see this article.


Using the filters to determine what is displayed on screen

Step 1. From the class page, uncheck the assessment categories that you do not wish to display on the page. Assessment categories that remain checked will be the only ones to display within your class page.

Note: assessment filters carry over from class to class. For example, if you uncheck past due in Spanish 1 and then navigate to your Spanish 2 class, those same filters will apply. To display past due assessments again, check the box for them to appear.

View As Student

Beneath your list of assessments, you will see a button that allows you to preview assessments from your students as if you were a student. Don't worry, your answers won't be saved.

Step 1: Go to the class you would like to view.

Step 2: Click View as Student below your assignment list.

Step 3: A new window will open in the Student Portal to test your assignments.


Managing students

As you scroll down on the class page, you will see your list of students appear. Within this list, you can...

  • Click the headings (username, first name, last name, email, total submissions) to sort ascending / descending

  • Configure student accommodations

  • Impersonate a student (i.e. see exactly what they see from their account)

  • Remove a student from your class


Configuring student accommodations

You can accommodate for students who have time extensions by following the steps below.

Step 1. Click the cog icon βš™οΈ on the right side of the page for the given student.

Step 2. Click the button to activate time extensions, which will illuminate the numbers below.

Step 3. Determine how much additional time you would like the student to have for a given question. For time and a half, use 1.5x. For double time, use 2x. For all other instances, you can enter a custom extension multiplier.

Once timing extensions are set, the timing parameters will automatically adjust for this student for timed questions. You will also see the change reflected in your class roster.

Note: time extensions are only visible on teacher accounts, so students in your class will not know if anyone has an extension; only you will.


Viewing a given student's account

To a view a student's account, you can click the eye πŸ‘οΈ icon next to the cog. This will let you impersonate that student and view their account.


Removing a student from your class

To remove a student from your class roster, click on the trash can πŸ—‘οΈ icon.

From there, confirm deletion.


Resetting student passwords

Within student settings via the cog icon βš™οΈ, you can also reset a student's password when necessary.

Note: teachers who have synced with an LMS like Google Classroom, Schoology, or Canvas should never have to reset or change a student's password, since those students access Extempore assessments directly from their LMS.
