Using Extempore on an iPad

How to use Extempore on an iPad

Extempore works best on iPad using the Extempore app. If the iPad can’t install apps (for example, a restricted or loaner device), you may still be able to use Extempore in Safari for basic access. Recording may be less reliable in a browser, so we recommend the app whenever possible.

Recommended: Use the Extempore iPad app

Using the app is the best option on iPad, especially for audio/video recording.

If you can’t install the app: Use Safari on iPad

  1. Open Safari on the iPad.

  2. Go to the Extempore site and sign in.

  3. When prompted, select Allow for Microphone and Camera access.

  4. If possible, complete a short test recording first

What to expect in Safari

Safari can work, but performance may vary depending on:

  • iPad model and available storage

  • iPadOS version

  • Safari permissions/settings

  • Assignment type (audio vs video, recording length, number of attempts)

  • Internet connection quality

If issues come up, the most reliable fix is switching to the app (if available) or using a laptop/desktop.

Troubleshooting (iPad + Safari)

  1. Check permissions

    • Go to iPad Settings → Safari and confirm Camera and Microphone are allowed.

    • If you previously denied access, update the permissions and fully close/reopen Safari.

  2. Close extra apps/tabs

    • Close unused apps and extra Safari tabs, then reload Extempore.

  3. Check your internet

    • Move closer to Wi-Fi and retry if uploads stall.

    • Avoid restricted or VPN-heavy networks if possible.
