Please note that this only applies to users that have sections inside of courses and are integrating Schoology/Canvas LMS with Extempore.
The Problem
Different than other LMS integrations, Schoology and Canvas have some unique complexities, allowing teachers to have multiple sections within a course for Extempore, each section is viewed as a separate class.
This created an issue in the Canvas or Schoology gradebook where each Extempore assessment would display as a separate column per course or section that it existed within.
The Solution
As of Apr 8, 2026, Extempore allows teachers with sections to automatically copy assessments across all sections so that they are being reported on in a single column in the gradebook for Schoology and Canvas.
How it works
Teachers using sections through Canvas or Schoology will now see an icon to the left of the class or section name inside of Extempore, implying that they are linked.
When creating an assessment in any of the linked classes on Extempore and clicking 'save', The copy assessment pop-up will display automatically inside of Extempore with the linked sections already selected.
Once an assessment is copied or imported into other sections or to the main linked course inside of Extempore, there will be an icon confirming that it has been linked.
FAQ
What if I create an assessment inside of a section and not in the primary course?
No problem. The same process applies and works the same way as creating the assessment in a primary course.
What if I copy or import an assessment into the main course or a section?
Once copied or imported, teachers can click the copy icon and will see the same pop-up that displayed automatically upon creating an assessment.
What if a teacher wants to exclude a section from an assessment?
No problem. Teachers can exclude a section the same way that they added a section in the copy assessment pop-up.
How can teachers tell if the assessment was linked correctly?
Assessments that have been linked will display an icon to the left of the assessment name. A blue branch implies where the assessment originated from; otherwise, a yellow link icon means the assessment was copied into this class.
Can I fix or relink assessments that were previously stuck or created before this update?
Unfortunately, no. This solution only applies to assessments that are created, copied, or imported after April 8, 2026.
