Overview
Teachers can now control when students can review their submissions on an assessment-by-assessment basis, instead of this being tied to Safe Mode at the account level.
This makes it possible to keep Safe Mode features like navigation warnings enabled, while still allowing students to review what they submitted right away when that fits the activity.
What changed (and why)
Before
“No submission review” was bundled into Safe Mode as an account-level preference.
If teachers wanted Safe Mode for navigation warnings, it also prevented students from reviewing attempts until grading was completed.
Now
“No submission review” is no longer controlled by the account-level Safe Mode setting.
Each assessment includes a Submission Review setting (sometimes shown as “Allow submission review”) that determines whether students can review attempts:
Immediately after submitting, or
Only after grading.
How to set Submission Review (during assessment creation or editing)
When creating or editing an assessment in the CMS, find Submission Review and choose one option:
Once submitted (Immediate)
Students can review their attempts as soon as they submit.
Once graded (default)
Students cannot review their attempts until grades and or feedback have been provided.
Common scenarios
Use Once submitted (Immediate) when:
students are allowed to reflect on their submission right away
you are using Safe Mode mainly for navigation warnings, not for restricting review
Use Once graded when:
you want to prevent students from seeing their attempt until after grading and feedback are complete
Summary
This change separates two needs that often conflict:
Safe Mode can remain enabled (for navigation warnings and related protections).
Submission Review can be enabled or disabled per assessment, depending on what students should see and when.
