Using Extempore Live Across Multiple Canvas Sections
1. Understand what’s changing 0:00
This update is for Canvas LMS users using Extempore Live / Synchronous Groups.
It addresses the need to group students across multiple course sections for an Extempore Live assessment.
The feature is being released in production on Friday, October 7th for Canvas LMS users. (coming soon for Schoology)
2. Create an Extempore Live group assessment 0:45
In Extempore, create a new assessment.
Set it as a group assessment.
Choose Extempore Live.
Enter the assessment details, such as the name and date, then click Next.
After launch, the assessment is automatically saved.
3. Copy the assessment to the other sections in the course 1:19
After launching, a pop-up appears asking whether you want to copy the assessment to all other sections in the course.
If you created the assessment in one section already, it does not need to be copied back to that same section.
Click Copy to duplicate the assessment into the other sections.
This makes the assessment available under the same course ID, which is what enables cross-section grouping.
4. Open the assessment rooms and enable cross-section grouping 1:41
Find the assessment and open View Rooms.
When the course has multiple sections, you will now see a checkbox to group across all sections for the course.
By default, you may only see students from the current section.
Check the box to display students from Section 1, Section 2, and any other sections in the course.
Then continue to room assignment and group students across sections as needed.
5. Review how grading and section views work in the gradebook 2:20
In the gradebook, the course now behaves like a single class.
There is an additional dropdown that lets you choose which section you want to view.
You can also view all sections within the course.
If you see N/A, that indicates an assignment that was not assigned to those students.
Assignments may be shared across all sections or limited to a single section.
